A microschool is a small, student-centered learning environment that combines the personalized approach of homeschooling with the structure and community of a traditional school. Microschools typically serve a small number of students, allowing for individualized instruction, flexible scheduling, and strong relationships between students and educators. 

Microschools differ from traditional schools in several ways:

Yes. Microschools operate legally in Arizona and are often structured as private schools, learning pods, or homeschool enrichment programs. Arizona has robust school choice laws that allow families to select educational options that best fit their child’s needs. 

I AM Academy is considered a private school. Some microschools operate as private schools, while others function as homeschool support programs where parents maintain homeschool status. Families will be informed of the specific classification and any responsibilities required.

We are currently accepting students 1st-6th grade.

Microschools intentionally keep class sizes small, often between 6–15 students, to ensure personalized attention and meaningful relationships. Our school is currently limiting the classroom size to 15 students.

Educators in microschools may include certified teachers, experienced educators, or subject-matter experts. I AM Academy will be using a Montessori inspired approach, mixed with a project-based style.  Microschools often use a blend of curricula, project-based learning, hands-on activities, and real-world experiences. Curriculum is chosen or adapted to meet individual student needs and learning styles while aligning with educational standards. 

Personalization is central to microschooling. Instruction is tailored to each student’s pace, interests, and strengths, with opportunities for enrichment or additional support as needed. 

Instead of traditional grades, many microschools use mastery-based assessments, portfolios, progress reports, and ongoing feedback to track growth and learning. 

A microschool day often includes a mix of:

Yes, I AM Academy accepts ESA (Empowerment Scholarship Account) funds. Families should confirm eligibility and allowable expenses through the Arizona Department of Education.
